Wedstival Wedding, Luxe Bohemian Festival Vibes

As seen in Hello May, August 2019.

James and Lulu first met in 2007, in the trenches of front office reception at a busy Melbourne hotel. Over the next two years, their connection evolved, first from colleagues to friends, and then into something much deeper. During those balmy summer nights of late 2009. between the beats of late night live gigs, music festivals, street markets, and tasty eateries, they fell in love.

Their shared interest in different cultures, and love for good food and wine, has inspired many of their adventures together over the last decade, both within Australia and overseas.

James' pragmatic and grounded nature is the perfect anchor for Lulu's creative, impassioned demeanour - the cool, calm and collected Yin to her lively, energetic Yang.

For their wedding, Lulu and James wanted to capture elements most important to them - delicious food, tasty beverages, stunning boho decor with a relaxed festival vibe, and great music - minus all the stuffy wedding tradition that would have felt unnatural to them. They also loved the idea of serving Latin cuisine. A year of planning with their exceptionally talented planner/stylist/wedding coordinator, Hattie Cox (The Hattie & Bairn Tribe), resulted in an incredibly fun three-day Wedstival weekend at the picturesque Harrison Estate.

The relaxed "Night-Before" BBQ was a great opportunity for family and friends to meet before the big day.

Over in the Glamping Paddock, it was all happening! Twinkling fairy lights lit the way to gorgeous bell tents and vintage caravans from Wanderlust Glamping and Twilight Glamping, and perhaps the prettiest portable toilets and showers you'll ever see, from Paddock Dreams. BYO camping guests also had plenty of room to park their caravans or pitch their own tents.

For the big day, James & Lulu opted to have two ceremonies, sans a bridal party. First, a private legals-only ceremony run by vivacious wedding celebrant, Jermaine Clarke, and witnessed only by their parents, followed by a larger main ceremony, where their best friend, Grace, told their story, led them through their vows and ring exchange, and pronounced them husband and wife in front of all their family and friends. Their faithful pup, Atticus (a.k.a. The Snout), was never far away.

Celebrations kicked off straight after the ceremony, with guests being ushered over to the cocktail lawn, for (you guessed it) cocktails, nibbles, and lawn games (One Big day). Keeping with the Latin food theme, guests grazed on Spanish cheeses and jamon, as well as tacos served by The Taco Man. Serenaded by the romantic tunes of Spanish Guitarist, Nathan Sinclair, and surrounded by the beauty of earthy boho furnishings, James and Lulu and all their guests whiled away the late summer afternoon.

Towards evening, guests followed their noses towards the Hay Shed, where food trucks (Lady Paella and Senior BBQ) were cooking up a storm! The once industrial Hay Shed, now adorned with real foliage installations, festoon lighting and moody pillar candles, had been transformed into a rustic, bohemian dining lounge. Entertainment included a touching acoustic performance by Lulu's childhood friend, Susie and her husband Nathan Goble. As day became night, good friend and DJ extraordinaire, Stu Waters, kicked off the party jams and the rug-cutters emerged in full force. With Spanish Cava flowing, the festivities carried on into the night, before the glampers and campers eventually made their way over to the Glamping Paddock to wind down or retreat.

James and Lulu thoroughly enjoyed their Wedstival of love. It brought them so much joy to see family and friends come together for a laid-back weekend of boho glamping fun. Truly a weekend they will never forget, and the perfect way to begin their life together as a married couple.
